Summary of trademark activity for February 2023 in Uruguay

On this occasion, we analyze the trademark activity in Uruguay during February 2023. To do so, we considered the registration and renewal trademark applications filed in the Uruguayan PTO (Dirección Nacional de la Propiedad Industrial -DNPI-). Just as we did in the report about the January’s activity, the applications have been sorted by the type of trademark. We have also compared the numbers with the activity of February for the past four years. The information has been extracted from the DNPI.

Analysis of trademark applications

During February 2023, a total of 429 trademark applications were filed in Uruguay. Of these applications, the majority were for protecting wordmark and device marks, a few applications were related to logo applications there was none for three-dimensional type.

Out of the 429 trademark applications, 207 were denominative marks, representing 48.2% of the total. This type of mark refers to those consisting exclusively of words or letters, without any design, image, or special typography.

Device marks came in second place, with a total of 205 applications, representing 47.8% of the total. Mixed or device marks combine denominative elements with graphic elements and may include designs, logos, colors, etc.

In third place are figurative marks, with a total of 17 applications, representing 4% of the total. This type of mark consists exclusively of a design or image, without any text.

Finally, there were no applications filed for three-dimensional marks. Three-dimensional marks distinguish products or packaging by their three-dimensional shape or appearance.

In summary, the trademark activity in February showed that denominative and mixed marks were the most common type in Uruguay, reaching a 95%, a pattern already seen in January’s activity.

Analysis of trademark renewal applications

Regarding renewals, a total of 440 applications were filed. Of these, 257 corresponded to denominative marks, 163 to mixed type marks, and 20 were intended for the renewal of a figurative mark. No renewal applications for three-dimensional marks were filed.

In summary, denominative and mixed marks represented 95.5% of renewal requests, confirming that they are the most popular type in Uruguay.

Comparison of trademark applications filed in February since 2020

Over the last four years, a fluctuating trend has been observed in the number of trademark applications filed in Uruguay during the month of February. In 2020, the highest number of applications was recorded with a total of 530. However, the following year, the number significantly decreased to 362 applications. In 2022, there was an increase compared to the previous year, with a total of 460 applications filed. In February 2023, the 429 applications represented a decrease of 6.74% compared to the previous year.

In the month of February 2020, 315 trademark renewal applications were filed in Uruguay. In the same month of the following year, 2021, there was a significant increase in the number of renewal applications, reaching a total of 396. For February 2022, the number of applications increased even more, reaching a total of 683. However, in February 2023, a decrease in the number of renewal applications was observed, with a total of 440 filed, representing a drop of 35.5%.
